Ellwood Derr is a composer and Professor of Music at The University of Michigan. His research has been published in European and American scholarly journals; he is a frequent presenter of papers at national and international meetings. In the early 80s he discovered Debussy's long-lost Piano Trio and prepared its first (critical) edition.
Professor Derr studied composition with Carl Orff. His own compositions are principally for voices, both solo and choral. His widely-performed song-cycle, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, was released on CD on the Centaur label in fall 1998; his critical edition of Handel's harpsichord works (1733) appeared in the catalogue of the G. Henle Verlag (Munich) later that year. During his sabbatical leave in winter 2000 he completed a long essay concerning relationships of several composers to six sonatas erroneously attributed to Mozart; his second sabbatical project, a shorter one, (dealing with the impact of one of Mozart's piano concertos, K. 27, on several of Beethoven's works) is well underway.
